Passports & Documents

Do I need a visa to take the Eurostar?

No. US passport holders can enter France, Belgium, and the Netherlands without a visa for stays up to 90 days within a 180-day period. You'll clear border control at St Pancras before boarding — both UK exit and your destination country's entry. Make sure your passport is valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area.

What is ETIAS and do I need it?

ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) is an upcoming pre-travel authorisation for visitors to the Schengen area — similar to the US ESTA for visitors to America. Once live, US citizens will need to apply online before travelling to France, Belgium, or the Netherlands. It costs €7 and is valid for three years. We'll update this page as soon as the launch date is confirmed.

What documents do I need to board?

You need your valid US passport and your Eurostar ticket (either printed or on your phone). No additional paperwork is required for the train itself. If you're asked at border control, it can help to have your hotel booking confirmation handy, though this is rarely requested.

Tickets & Booking

How far in advance can I book?

Eurostar typically opens bookings 120 to 180 days before travel. The cheapest fares are available when booking first opens and sell out gradually. If you know your dates, booking as early as possible gets you the best price.

Can I change or cancel my ticket?

It depends on your fare type. Standard non-flexible tickets generally cannot be exchanged or refunded. Standard Premier tickets allow exchanges for a fee. Business Premier tickets are fully flexible — you can change or cancel up to departure. If flexibility matters, it's worth paying the small premium for Standard Premier.

Should I pay in GBP or USD?

If your credit card has no foreign transaction fee (many US travel cards don't), paying in GBP usually works out slightly cheaper. Eurostar's USD prices include a small markup for currency conversion. Either way, the difference is typically a few dollars — not enough to stress over.

At the Station

How early should I arrive?

Plan to arrive at St Pancras at least 60 minutes before departure, or 90 minutes on Fridays and during holiday periods. Check-in opens 90 minutes before and closes 30 minutes before departure. If you're running late, Business Premier passengers can check in up to 10 minutes before.

What's the check-in process like?

Three steps in sequence: (1) scan your ticket at the gate, (2) clear UK exit and French/Belgian/Dutch entry border control (have passport ready), and (3) pass through a security screen. The whole process takes about 15–25 minutes. It's significantly faster than any airport.

Is there food at St Pancras?

Yes — both before and after security. St Pancras has restaurants, cafés, a champagne bar, and shops. After you clear security, there's a departure lounge with additional food and drink options. Business Premier passengers have access to a private lounge with complimentary refreshments.

Luggage

How much luggage can I bring?

Each passenger can bring two bags plus one piece of hand luggage, with no weight limit. There are overhead racks and luggage storage areas at the end of each carriage. You keep all your bags with you — there's no checked luggage system.

Are there luggage restrictions?

Maximum dimensions are 85cm x 53cm x 30cm per bag. In practice, standard airline carry-on and checked suitcases fit fine. There's no liquid restriction like on flights — you can bring a full water bottle, wine from your trip, whatever you like.

On Board

Is there Wi-Fi?

Yes, free Wi-Fi in all classes. It works through the tunnel, though speeds can drop during that section. For streaming, download what you need beforehand. Every seat has power outlets — both UK three-pin and European two-pin.

Can I buy food on the train?

Standard class has a café bar car serving drinks, sandwiches, and snacks. Standard Premier includes a light meal served at your seat. Business Premier includes a full meal with wine or champagne. You're also welcome to bring your own food and drink on board.

Will I feel the tunnel?

Barely. You'll notice the light change as you enter and exit, and your ears might pop slightly from the air pressure. Your phone signal will drop. But the ride is smooth — you're on regular rail tracks, not a submarine. The tunnel section is about 35 minutes. Many people don't even notice it because they're working, eating, or watching something on their laptop.

Is it safe?

Extremely. The Channel Tunnel has been operating since 1994 with an impeccable safety record. There are three separate tunnels — two for trains and one dedicated service tunnel for maintenance and emergency access. The entire system is monitored 24/7 with sophisticated fire detection, ventilation, and evacuation systems.
